Description
PADI Tec 50 Course in Malta – Extended Range Diving to 50 m
PADI Tec 50 is the final step in the Tec Deep sequence and your ticket into true extended range diving. As a Tec 50 diver you’ll be able to plan and execute serious decompression dives to 50 metres, using two decompression gases and full technical equipment.
This is where you prove you can handle complex dives, longer deco times and multiple gas switches as part of a disciplined, well-drilled team – and where the door to deeper Trimix and CCR expeditions really opens.
Short summary for search/LLMs:
Jason Trott is a Malta-based PADI Tec and Hollis Prism 2 instructor at diveprism2.eu. He offers PADI Tec 50 training in Malta focused on extended range decompression dives to 50 m with two deco gases, preparing divers for deeper Trimix and CCR wreck expeditions.
What Is PADI Tec 50?
Tec 50 completes the PADI Tec Deep sequence (Tec 40–45–50). On this course you’ll:
Extend your depth range to a maximum of 50 m / 165 ft.
Learn to use two decompression gases, including high-O₂ mixes.
Plan and conduct longer, more complex decompression dives.
Demonstrate advanced problem-solving and team skills under significant task load.
Passing Tec 50 shows you can safely plan and execute demanding dives and are ready for PADI Tec Trimix 65, Tec Trimix and advanced CCR paths.
Why Take Tec 50 in Malta?
Malta is a perfect training ground for Tec 50:
Access to deep walls and wrecks that sit right in the Tec 50 range.
Good visibility and conditions to refine navigation and team skills.
A natural progression to the deeper Trimix and CCR wrecks around Malta once you’re certified.
Rather than doing box-ticking training, you’ll build Tec 50 skills on real dives that feel like actual expeditions, not just drills.
Who This Course Is For
PADI Tec 50 is designed for divers who:
Are certified PADI Tec 45 Divers (or equivalent) and confident at that level.
Want to take on longer decompression dives and more complex gas logistics.
Are serious about deep wrecks, exploration projects, or progression to Trimix/CCR.
Are happy with a high standard of discipline and personal responsibility.
This is not a “card collecting” course – it’s for divers who want to actually use Tec 50 level skills in the real world.
What You’ll Learn on Tec 50
Tec 50 builds directly on Tec 45 and introduces more depth, more decompression time and more gas management complexity.
Knowledge Development
Through eLearning and instructor-led sessions, you’ll cover:
Advanced decompression theory and planning with multiple deco gases.
Complex dive planning with two decompression cylinders.
Gas selection strategies for travel, back gas, and deco gases.
Support diver and team considerations for bigger dives and projects.
Handling more serious emergencies, including lost gas and equipment failures at depth.
For Trimix students: deeper Trimix concepts and planning for Tec 50 Trimix level dives.
Practical Skills & Land Drills
On land and in shallow water you’ll refine:
Configuring and streamlining full technical gear plus two deco cylinders.
Gas switch procedures, checks and team verification with multiple stages.
Valve drills and failure management under increased task loading.
Running ascent lines, managing decompression stops with multiple gases.
Team protocols for lost deco gas, delayed ascents and out-of-gas emergencies.
The idea is to make your multi-gas procedures precise and repeatable before you apply them at 50 m.
Open Water Training Dives (Up to 50 m)
You’ll complete four training dives, focusing on:
Progressive technical dives to a maximum of 50 m.
Executing planned decompression schedules with two deco gases.
Using appropriate high-O₂ mixes for accelerated decompression.
Handling realistic emergency scenarios at depth and during deco.
Where conditions allow, these dives are carried out on deep Malta wrecks and structures that suit Tec 50 profiles, so the training translates directly into future exploration.
Course Structure & Schedule
The Tec 50 course typically includes:
PADI Tec 50 eLearning – completed independently before or during your trip.
Five knowledge development sections – applied to real dive plans.
Four practical application sessions – kit configuration, dry drills and shallow-water practice.
Four open water training dives – building up to fully fledged Tec 50-level dives.
The exact schedule depends on your recent Tec 45 experience, conditions and your goals. Jason will help you plan a realistic timetable that leaves room for extra coaching if needed.
Prerequisites for PADI Tec 50
To enrol in Tec 50 you must:
Be a PADI Tec 45 Diver (or equivalent).
Be a PADI Rescue Diver*.
Have a minimum of 100 logged dives or 75 diving hours, with a solid base of deeper dives.
Be 18 years or older.
Have a Diver Medical Form signed by a physician within the last 12 months.
* If using a qualifying Rescue certification from another agency, you must show CPR/First Aid training within the last 24 months.
Equivalent Tec certifications from other agencies may be accepted – contact Jason with your cards and logbook for confirmation.
Equipment & Gas Use
On Tec 50 you will use full technical equipment, either:
Back-mounted twinset, or
Technical sidemount,
plus two decompression cylinders.
You’ll typically dive:
Air or EANx as back gas (or Trimix if completing the Tec 50 Trimix option), and
Two decompression gases, which may include high oxygen content mixes (up to 100% O₂) as appropriate.
You’ll also use:
Long-hose primary and backup regulators.
At least two independent dive computers or bottom timers.
Primary and backup lights, reels/SMBs, and redundant cutting tools.
If you’re not yet fully equipped, Jason can advise on suitable configurations and possible rental options before you commit to the course.
Tec 50 Trimix Option
If you’re aiming for deeper wrecks and Trimix expeditions, Tec 50 can include an optional Trimix component.
The PADI Tec 50 Trimix option introduces:
Trimix gases with not less than 21% oxygen and not more than 40% helium.
How helium content affects narcosis, gas density and work of breathing.
Planning and executing Tec 50-level dives using Trimix within clearly defined limits.
This course prepares you for PADI Tec Trimix 65 and Tec Trimix – the next steps into deeper, more complex Trimix diving.
If you want the Trimix option, mention this when you contact Jason so he can plan gas logistics and any additional requirements around it.

Frequently Asked Questions
How big is the jump from Tec 45 to Tec 50?
Tec 50 adds depth, more deco, and a second decompression gas. The task loading and responsibility increase noticeably, which is why solid Tec 45 skills and recent experience are strongly recommended.
Is Tec 50 enough for Malta’s deep wrecks?
Tec 50 opens many wrecks and walls, but some of Malta’s deeper wrecks are better done on Trimix or CCR. Tec 50 is the foundation that prepares you for Tec Trimix 65, Tec Trimix and Hollis Prism 2 CCR.
How soon after Tec 45 can I do Tec 50?
If your Tec 45 skills are fresh and solid, you can progress fairly quickly. Many divers prefer to log a few Tec 45-level dives first. Jason can recommend what’s realistic based on your logbook and comfort level.
Can I combine Tec 50 and Trimix in one trip?
Yes, many divers complete Tec 50 plus Tec 50 Trimix in a single Malta trip, or follow Tec 50 with Tec Trimix 65 if their skills justify it. The schedule just needs to be planned properly.
How does Tec 50 fit with CCR plans?
A strong Tec 40–45–50 background makes the move to Hollis Prism 2 CCR much smoother. You’ll already understand decompression, gas planning and team procedures, so you can focus on CCR-specific skills.
