Description

Guided Technical & CCR Wreck Dives in Malta

Malta is one of the best places in Europe for technical wreck diving – clear water, steep walls and a long list of historic wrecks in the 40–100 m range.

On this page you can book guided open circuit Tec dives and CCR wreck dives with Malta-based technical and rebreather instructor Jason Trott.

Why Dive Malta’s Wrecks with a Tec & CCR Guide?

Technical wreck dives around Malta can be serious, complex dives with:

  • Depths beyond recreational limits

  • Current, overhead environments and long decompression

  • Gas logistics and trimix planning

  • Navigation and shotline management

A dedicated Tec / CCR guide:

  • Knows the sites, routes, hazards and bailout options

  • Keeps the team within realistic limits for conditions and experience

  • Helps streamline planning, gas choices and deco schedules

  • Lets you focus on enjoying the dive, not figuring everything out from scratch

Whether you’re visiting Malta for a few days or you’re local and want structured deeper dives, guided Tec and CCR days give you maximum value and safety for your time in the water.

Who These Guided Dives Are For

These trips are designed for:

  • Qualified Tec divers (PADI Tec 40/45/50 or equivalent)

  • Qualified CCR divers on recognised units (Hollis Prism 2 and others), diving within their certified depth

  • Divers who want to explore Maltese wrecks with someone who dives them regularly

  • People who value small teams, clear briefings and realistic plans

If you’re not yet certified for the depth or gear you’d like to use, check out the Tec course and Hollis Prism 2 CCR training options and combine training with guided dives in the same trip.

Open Circuit Tec Guided Dives

All OC Tec dives are planned using appropriate Tec procedures, gas planning and decompression, not “trust me bro” recreational practices.

40–45 m – Tec 40–45 Level Wreck Dives

Ideal for:

  • Tec 40–45 divers

  • Those getting back into Tec after a break

  • Shorter decompression profiles

Typical dives (examples):

  • 35–45 m wrecks and reefs where you can practice skills while still enjoying real structure and history.

  • Profiles that let you focus on team work, gas management and positioning without huge deco obligations.

Good for:

  • Warming up early in a trip

  • Mixed teams (e.g. Tec 40 and Tec 45 in the same group)

  • Training-style dives with a more “fun” feel

45–55 m – Tec 50 & Trimix Profiles

Ideal for:

  • Tec 50 divers and above

  • Trimix-certified divers wanting real wreck profiles

  • Longer deco dives and more complex planning

Typical dives (examples):

  • Deeper, more intact wrecks with overhead areas, structure and history.

  • Profiles in the 45–55 m range with planned deco, multiple gases and clear objectives.

Good for:

  • Putting your Tec 50 / Trimix training into practice

  • Wreck-focused dives where you want a guide who knows the layout, key features and safest routes

Note: Exact site choice depends on your certification level, recent experience, conditions and logistics on the day. You’ll plan the dive together during the briefing.

CCR & Hollis Prism 2 Guided Wreck Dives

CCR opens up longer bottom times, deeper wrecks and smoother dives – especially around Malta, where many interesting wrecks sit below 50 m.

Jason primarily dives and teaches the Hollis Prism 2, but you’re welcome on other recognised units with the right certification and experience.

40–60 m CCR Wreck Dives

Perfect for:

  • Newer CCR divers with a solid handle on their unit

  • Divers certified to 40–60 m on CCR

  • Long, comfortable dives on classic wrecks

These dives focus on:

  • Clean team positioning and communication

  • Practical use of bailout planning and deco strategies

  • Time to actually explore the wreck, not just race around it

Use these dives to build real experience after your CCR course or to get comfortable on new-to-you wrecks with a guide.

60–100 m+ Deep CCR & Trimix Expeditions

For highly experienced CCR and Trimix divers, guided dives are available to selected deep wrecks and structures in the 60–100 m+ range, conditions and logistics permitting.

These dives are for:

  • Established CCR divers with appropriate depth certification (e.g. CCR60/CCR100)

  • Divers with recent, relevant dive logs and proven bailout planning

  • People who understand the seriousness of deep decompression dives

Expect:

  • Detailed pre-dive planning and gas calculations

  • Very clear turnaround, bailout and abort criteria

  • Conservative profiles and no “hero” behaviour

Deep CCR and Trimix dives are always arranged case-by-case. Jason will assess your experience and logs before confirming any depths or specific wrecks.

How a Typical Guided Tec / CCR Day Works

A standard guided day usually includes:

  1. Pre-trip contact

    • You send details of your certs, recent dives and depth comfort.

    • Jason suggests realistic site and depth options for your level.

  2. On the day – in-person briefing

    • Site overview, entry/exit, lines and key features.

    • Hazards, bailout options, lost line/buddy procedures.

    • Gas plans, deco strategy, turnaround pressures / PO₂ limits.

  3. Kit & pre-dive checks

    • Proper Tec / CCR pre-dive checks, S-drills, bubble checks.

    • Team positioning, roles and signals.

  4. The dive

    • Clean descent, securing the line, run the plan.

    • Controlled, conservative decompression and ascent.

  5. Post-dive debrief

    • What went well, what to tweak next time.

    • Options for the next day’s depth / site progression.

Prerequisites, Certification & Experience

To join guided Tec / CCR dives you will need:

  • For OC Tec (40–45 m range):

    • PADI Tec 40 / Tec 45 (or equivalent)

    • Recent dives in the 35–45 m range

  • For OC Tec (45–55 m range):

    • PADI Tec 50 and/or appropriate Trimix certification

    • Recent deep Tec dives with decompression

    • Solid valve and problem-solving skills

  • For CCR:

    • Certification on your unit to the planned depth (e.g. 40 m/60 m/100 m)

    • Fully serviced unit and bailout gear

    • Recent CCR dives of similar complexity

Everyone:

  • Must complete a medical questionnaire and, if required, a doctor’s sign-off.

  • Must show logbook evidence of recent dives at comparable depths.

If you’re not sure whether you meet the prerequisites, send Jason your certs and recent dives and he’ll be honest about what’s realistic.

Equipment, Gases & Logistics

Open Circuit Tec:

  • Twinset or sidemount with long hose and redundant first stages

  • Deco gases as agreed in the plan (EANx / O₂ / Trimix where appropriate)

  • SMB, reels, backup lights and timing/depth redundancy

CCR:

  • Fully functional unit (Hollis Prism 2 or other recognised CCR)

  • Appropriate cylinders and bailout configuration for the planned profile

  • Confirmed sorb freshness and unit service status

Gas, sorb and cylinder rental can be arranged in advance. Please highlight what you need when you first contact Jason so he can confirm availability and pricing.

Why Dive with Jason Trott & diveprism2.eu

  • Malta-based, full time – Jason actually dives here year-round, not just on holiday.

  • PADI Tec and Hollis Prism 2 instructor, focused on wreck and CCR diving.

  • Small teams and personal approach – your diving is not a conveyor belt.

  • Clear focus on risk management, bailout and realistic decision-making.

  • Strong link with training progression if you want to upskill on the same trip.

You get guiding from someone who is not just a boat guide, but a technical instructor invested in your long-term progression.

Pricing, Packages & How to Book

Pricing depends on:

  • Open circuit vs CCR

  • Depth band and site choice

  • Gas, sorb and equipment rental needs

  • Number of dives / days

Common setups:

  • Single day of guided Tec / CCR diving – good for a warm-up or “bucket list” wreck.

  • Multi-day packages – ideal if you want a progression in depth / complexity across several sites.

  • Training + guiding combos – for example, complete Tec 40/45 or CCR training and then stay on for guided dives.

Best next step:
Send Jason a short message with:

  • Your cert levels (Tec / CCR)

  • Recent relevant dives

  • Trip dates and preferred depth range

He’ll reply with realistic options, suggested dive plan(s) and a price breakdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I join guided Tec dives right after finishing a course?
Yes – guided dives are a great way to consolidate new skills. We’ll keep the first day conservative and build up as your comfort and performance allow.

Do you mix OC Tec and CCR in the same team?
Sometimes, but only when it makes sense and the profiles line up. In many cases, it’s better to keep OC and CCR teams separate or very clearly structured.

What if the conditions don’t suit the planned wreck or depth?
We always have backup options. Depth, time and site will be scaled to conditions and your experience – the plan is to get good, safe dives done, not force a particular wreck.

Do you offer scooter (DPV) dives?
Scooters may be possible for appropriately trained and experienced divers. Mention this when you enquire and Jason will confirm if DPV dives are suitable for your goals.

Can non-Tec buddies join on recreational gas?
For these guided dives, everyone in the team must be on appropriate Tec or CCR configurations for the planned profile. Recreational divers are better suited to a separate, shallower charter.
