Description

PADI Tec 45 Course in Malta – Advanced Decompression Diving to 45 m

PADI Tec 45 is where you fully commit to becoming a technical diver. Building on Tec 40, this course extends your depth range to 45 metres and trains you to plan and execute single and repetitive decompression dives using one decompression cylinder with up to 100% oxygen.

You’ll dive a twinset or sidemount configuration, refine your emergency procedures and start operating like a genuine technical team – not just an experienced recreational diver.

What Is PADI Tec 45?

Tec 45 is the second step in the PADI Tec Deep sequence. It:

  • Increases your depth limit to 45 m / 150 ft.

  • Adds longer, planned decompression with higher oxygen mixes.

  • Demands more precise gas planning, team discipline and problem solving.

Tec 45 is also a prerequisite for Tec 50, and an important foundation for Trimix and CCR training later on.

Why Take Tec 45 in Malta?

Malta’s wrecks and walls in the 40–45 m range are ideal for Tec 45 training:

  • Real wreck structures to navigate, not just featureless bottom.

  • Clear water and good visibility to refine team procedures.

  • Easy access to progressive deeper profiles as your skills grow.

Instead of just doing “training dives”, you’ll build advanced decompression skills while diving sites you’ll actually want to come back to.

Who This Course Is For

Tec 45 is for divers who:

  • Have completed PADI Tec 40 (or equivalent).

  • Want to extend their range and dive with more serious decompression obligations.

  • Are comfortable in a twinset or sidemount and ready to push their skills further.

  • Are thinking about Tec 50, Trimix or CCR and want a strong intermediate step.

If it’s been a while since your Tec 40 course, Jason can add a refresher or extra coaching dives to get you back in the groove before pushing deeper.

What You’ll Learn on Tec 45

Your Tec 45 training builds directly on Tec 40 and adds deeper, more complex dives with more demanding emergency scenarios.

Knowledge Development

Through eLearning and workshops you’ll cover:

  • Advanced decompression theory and decompression models.

  • Planning single and repetitive decompression dives to 45 m.

  • More detailed gas planning and contingency planning.

  • Managing longer decompression obligations and increased gas loads.

  • Refining the technical diver mindset: risk awareness, discipline, decision-making.

  • For Trimix students: introduction to Tec 45 Trimix planning and considerations.

Practical Skills & Land Drills

On land and in confined/shallow water you’ll refine:

  • Twinset/sidemount configuration and problem solving.

  • Valve shutdowns and regulator failures under greater task load.

  • Deco gas handling, switches, and label/ID discipline.

  • SMB deployment, ascent control and decompression stop management.

  • Team responses to free-flows, out-of-gas scenarios and lost gas.

The goal is to make your reactions smooth and automatic before adding depth and deco time.

Open Water Training Dives (Up to 45 m)

You’ll complete four open water training dives, focusing on:

  • Progressive depth and deco time up to 45 m.

  • Execution of planned decompression schedules using one deco cylinder.

  • Task loading under realistic conditions – reel work, navigation, communication.

  • Handling simulated emergencies at depth and during decompression.

Where possible, dives are conducted on suitable wrecks and structures around Malta, to keep training realistic and engaging.

Course Structure & Schedule

Typical Tec 45 structure:

  • Independent study – PADI Tec 45 eLearning.

  • Classroom sessions – gas planning, decompression models, real dive plan walkthroughs.

  • Four practical application sessions – dry skills, equipment, drills.

  • Four open water dives – progressive, skills-focused, real technical dive profiles.

The exact schedule can be tailored to your availability and how recently you completed Tec 40. Jason can advise the best format for you.

Prerequisites for PADI Tec 45

To enrol in Tec 45 you must:

  • Be a PADI Tec 40 Diver (or equivalent).

  • Be a PADI Rescue Diver with CPR/First Aid training within the last 24 months.

  • Have at least 50 logged dives, including 10 dives deeper than 30 m / 100 ft.

  • Be 18 years old or older.

  • Have a Diver Medical form signed by a physician within the last 12 months.

Some equivalent qualifications from other agencies may count – contact Jason with your certs and logbook details to confirm.

Equipment & Gas Use

On Tec 45 you will:

  • Dive a twinset or sidemount configuration with full redundancy.

  • Use Air or EANx as back gas, depending on the dive plan.

  • Carry a single decompression cylinder with up to 100% oxygen for accelerated deco.

You’ll also use:

  • Long-hose and backup regulator.

  • Suitable exposure protection for Maltese conditions.

  • Reel/SMB, backup lights and backup timing/depth devices.

If you don’t own a full Tec rig yet, contact Jason before booking to discuss configuration options and any rental possibilities.

Tec 45 Trimix Option

If you’re interested in pushing into normoxic Trimix later, Tec 45 includes an optional Trimix component.

Tec 45 Trimix teaches you to use trimix with:

  • Not less than 21% oxygen

  • Not more than 35% helium

You’ll learn:

  • How helium content affects narcosis, gas density and work of breathing.

  • How to adjust your planning for Trimix dives within Tec 45 limits.

Additional dives and prerequisites may apply. If you want to include the Tec 45 Trimix Diver option, mention this when you contact Jason so the course plan and gas logistics can be built around it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How different does Tec 45 feel compared to Tec 40?
Tec 45 adds depth, more deco and more demanding scenarios. You’ll feel a step up in task loading and responsibility, but it’s built on the foundation you formed in Tec 40, not a sudden jump into the unknown.

Do I need recent Tec 40 experience?
Recent Tec 40 dives are strongly recommended. If you’re rusty, Jason can add a refresher session or extra dives before you start the Tec 45 performance requirements.

Can I do Tec 45 and Tec 50 back-to-back in Malta?
Sometimes, yes – if your skills and comfort level support it. Many divers prefer to consolidate Tec 45 experience first. Jason can help you build a realistic progression plan.

Is Tec 45 enough for serious wreck diving?
Tec 45 opens up a lot of deeper wreck opportunities, but many of Malta’s iconic deep wrecks are better suited to Tec 50, Trimix or CCR. Tec 45 is a solid intermediate step on the way there.

Can I continue to CCR after Tec 45?
Absolutely. A strong Tec 40–45 base makes moving onto Hollis Prism 2 CCR much smoother, because your decompression, planning and team skills are already in place.
